Road going Porsche 963? You've got to be kidding me!

Race to the road: Introducing the Porsche 963 RSP

Introducing the Porsche 963 RSP
  • One-off Raceborn commission created for, named after, Roger S. Penske
  • Debuted today on public roads near Le Mans beside ‘Count Rossi’ 917
  • At the wheel of the 963 RSP was three-time Le Mans winner Timo Bernhard
  • Based on the 963 racecar with unique Sonderwunsch-led design changes inspired by the Porsche 917 that first took to the road 50 years ago – unique bodywork and interior
One-of-one project pays homage to Count Rossi 917 in 50th anniversary year
Le Mans. As Porsche prepares for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a sister to the 963 Hypercar has been revealed – named the 963 RSP. An extreme one-off based on the IMSA championship and WEC championship winning machine, the car closely follows the design direction taken by a very special 917 50 years ago. Fittingly, it made its debut today on the streets near the Circuit de la Sarthe alongside the car that inspired its creation.

The work of a team from Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport and Porsche Cars North America in partnership with motorsport legend Roger Penske, whose initials form the name of the car, the 963 RSP was influenced by the trailblazing 917 and an audacious drive that took place half a century ago.

In April 1975, a 917 (chassis 30) – the most advanced endurance race car at that time – made an extraordinary journey, not on the track, but on public roads. From the factory in Zuffenhausen, it traveled to Paris - at the wheel was its enigmatic owner, who insisted on as few changes as possible to the car, which remains in France, and on the road, to this day.

“This really started out as a “what if?” – a passion project by a small team of enthusiasts at Penske and at Porsche who together imagined a version of the 963 that really resembled as closely as possible the spirit and appearance of the Count Rossi 917,” said Porsche Cars North America President and CEO Timo Resch, who conceived of the original idea. “The 917 from the story was every inch a race car – albeit one driven on the road – and we took the same approach with the 963 RSP. It uses beautiful materials of the best quality available, but is still every bit a race car underneath.”

The 963 RSP features significant changes over the car on which it is based. Unlike the competition racecars, which are wrapped in different colors, the 963 RSP is the first of its kind to be painted; a unique challenge due to the nature of the carbon fiber and Kevlar® bodywork which is ultra-thin in places to save weight. In a nod to the Count Rossi 917, the 963 RSP is finished in Martini Silver and features uniquely altered bodywork and a bespoke tan leather and Alcantara interior inspired by the trim choices made by Count Rossi 50 years ago. A dedicated mechanical and electronic setup were configured for its debut on the streets near Le Mans – including a raised ride height and softened dampers, as well as a reprogrammed control unit to allow for the headlights and taillights to operate closer to those of a road car. These changes along with modified bodywork to cover the wheel arches, the use of Michelin wet weather compound tires and even the fitment of a horn meant the car met the necessary criteria to be allowed to drive on the road and wear license plates under special permission from the French authorities and with the enthusiastic support of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), which runs the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

“That was an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime,” said Timo Bernhard, who was at the wheel of the 963 RSP for its first miles on the road. “Driving down a public road with a 917 beside me – it felt unreal. The car behaved perfectly – it felt a little friendlier and more forgiving than the normal 963 – and felt super special and a lot more comfortable, especially as I was not needing all my safety gear.”

“We have enjoyed a terrific relationship with Porsche dating back to 1972. The Porsche 917/30, in particular, was one of the greatest eras in Team Penske history with numerous wins and championships, along with the closed-course speed record set by Mark Donohue in 1975,” said Roger Penske, Chairman of the Penske Corporation. “With such a remarkable partnership continuing to this day, we felt it was time to create the most exciting car we could imagine. Just like the 917, I wanted this car to be authentic to its origin and have as few changes to it as possible. When we got into the project, the differences in the two generations of race cars provided a great challenge. What emerged is a car that has lost none of its edge and is exciting whether on the track or on the road.”

The 963 RSP will go on public display at the Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans before it returns to Stuttgart to be shown at the Porsche Museum. In July the car will appear alongside the 917 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The 963 project in detail:
The concept originated during a trackside meeting between Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President, Porsche Motorsport, and Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Racing LMDh at Road Atlanta. Inspired by the 917, they imagined repeating the feat with a 963. This small group took the basic premise of the project to Roger Penske and Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport – both of whom encouraged and developed the idea further. Roger Penske was nominated as the customer for the car, with the 963 being named in his honor.

Design process – exterior:
With the concept established, the Sonderwunsch team in Zuffenhausen began translating the idea to reality in cooperation with the Sonderwunsch colleagues at Porsche Classic in Atlanta – a standalone facility opened in 2023. Drawing on the changes selected by Count Rossi in 1975, Grant Larson, Director of Special Projects at Style Porsche, and his designers envisioned a 963 that would stay as close as possible to the original car with a silver and black color pallet on the outside, and a tan leather and Alcantara mix for the interior. This extended to the decision to paint the car – as was the case with the 917 – rather than wrapping it, as is the norm with current race cars, and a significant challenge due to the Kevlar® and carbon fiber body construction. The paint to sample color – ‘Martini Silver’ – was verified from the records held by the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, with a triple-layer lacquer applied. Minor components such as hinges and wing connectors are all finished in satin black with a unique 3D printed ‘963 RSP’ created and applied to the rear of the car.

To closer align the 963 to the form of the 917, bodywork changes were made to the 963 RSP. These include the creation of unique fender vents – where otherwise the front and rear fender vents would be open. A collaboration between Sonderwunsch and Porsche Penske Motorsport, the vents were digitally rendered first before applied to the car, with the new design allowing air within the wheel wells to escape. Additionally, the carbon fiber blanking plates that sit within the rear wing – a requirement on the race car – were able to be removed for the 963 RSP.

Added to the nose of the car – replacing the graphic that is applied to all conventional 963s – was an enamel Porsche badge, a detailed shared with the 917.

A small detail change was the addition of 1970s-era Michelin logos for the tire walls, and rain-spec 18-inch tires over forged OZ racing wheels. Finally – and in another first – mounting points for front and rear license plates were added ahead of the car being driven on public roads to mark the 50th anniversary of the first street drive of the 917.

Design process – interior:
Possibly the greatest departure from the 963 race car occurs inside the 963 RSP. Following the lead of the handcrafted and completely bespoke interior of the 917 (which remains unrestored to this day) the 963 RSP features a mix of soft tan leather and Alcantara. Whereas the race car features very few comfort features, the 963 RSP is more accommodating – with the single piece carbon seat trimmed in leather with soft cushioning placed down the center and a fixed headrest mounted on the carbon fiber bulkhead. The seats are – in common with the race version – air conditioned. The leg cushions in the footwell as well as the roof lining and pillars have been retrimmed in light Alcantara while the steering wheel – where the majority of the vehicle’s functions are located – has been finished in leather. A light-hearted addition is a detachable 3D-printed cup holder capable of securely holding a Porsche travel mug.

Next to the driver, a new trimmed panel provides a location for the car’s Peltor headset and steering wheel when not in use as well as a platform for the laptop that starts and assists in the operation of the car and Roger Penske’s custom carbon crash helmet.

While the color of design of the interior are obvious references to the 917, more subtle design elements can be found – among them bespoke end plates for the ventilation system which mimic the styling of the fan on top of the 917’s flat-12 engine.

The doors are finished in leather and Alcantara, with a small alloy plaque set into one of them denoting the chassis number and the date and location of construction.

Mechanical changes:
The ride height of the car was raised to its maximum available setting to accommodate road use, while the adjustable Multimatic DSSV dampers designed for racing prototypes are in their softest setting to create a more compliant ride.

The control unit was modified to allow the car to operate turn signals and allow the headlights to be adjusted for road. The hybrid V8 powertrain with a lithium-ion battery – capable of being run on electrical power only – remains in standard race tune in the 963 RSP, but power delivery from the MGU has been remapped to provide smooth delivery more appropriate for road use versus race competition The powertrain was also re-mapped to be capable of running on pump gas – a significant undertaking for the team.

Finishing touches:
Accompanying the 963 RSP are a custom fitted carbon crash helmet with Martini Silver accents to match the car, and a bespoke Snap On toolset with a chest bearing accents in the same color, a plaque commemorating the project and its namesake, and handles wrapped in the same leather used in the interior of the car. The drawers also feature custom foam inserts to carry tools and special equipment necessary to start, service and operate the car.

While capable of being driven on the road under special circumstances and in accordance with local requirements (the modifications to the car allowed it to use French ‘W’ or manufacturer license plates for its debut), the 963 RSP is not a homologated addition to the Porsche model line-up and is intended to remain a very special one-off.

The powertrain of the 963:
The 963 is powered by a 4.6 liter twin-turbocharged V8 making up to approximately 680 hp that has its origins in the RS Spyder race program operated by Penske which claimed all titles in the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series from 2006 to 2008. The engine was enlarged from 3.4 to 4.6 liters and then used in the limited-production 918 Spyder road car, which debuted in 2013. The flat crankshaft and short stroke of the engine allow for a low mounting point, helping to optimize the center of gravity of the car. While the 918 Spyder used the engine in naturally aspirated form, the 963 pairs it with two turbochargers provided by the Dutch manufacturer Van der Lee. These turbochargers generate very moderate boost pressure and are mounted on the hot side of the engine, optimizing throttle response. Overall, around 80 percent of the engine components in the 963 are shared with the 918 Spyder, which was already designed to work together with a hybrid system.

The standardized components of the electric boost system are supplied by Bosch (motor generator unit, electronics and software) and Williams Advanced Engineering (high-voltage battery). The motor generator unit (MGU), which is responsible for the power output and recuperation under braking at the rear axle, works in direct interaction with the sequential seven-speed gearbox from Xtrac. The MGU sits in the bell housing between the combustion engine and the gearbox.

The hybrid’s entire electrical system produces up to 800 volts. The uniform battery has an energy capacity of 1.35 kWh, which can be mobilized at any time under acceleration. An output of 30 to 50 kW is available in short bursts but does not change the overall output of the powertrain. When the thrust of the MGU kicks in, the power of the combustion engine, which can reach over 8,000 rpm (depending on the BoP), automatically decreases.

New record: Porsche 911 GT3 masters Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 6:56.294 minutes!

Fastest manual production car at the Nürburgring

New record: Porsche 911 GT3 masters Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 6:56.294 minutes

  • Previous record lap for manual transmission car beaten by over 9.5 seconds
  • New 911 GT3 with manual transmission around 3.6 seconds faster than predecessor model with PDK
  • Significantly better performance with unchanged engine power thanks to further development of the chassis
Atlanta. The 2025 Porsche 911 GT3 is the fastest production car with a manual transmission on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Porsche brand ambassador Joerg Bergmeister beat the previous record – set by a competitor with a significantly more powerful engine – by over 9.5 seconds. Due to extensive continued development of all performance-relevant vehicle components, the manual 911 GT3 with optional Weissach Package was 3.633 seconds quicker than the predecessor model (992.1) with PDK.

“More and more customers of the 911 GT3 are opting for the six-speed manual transmission. And more and more often we are asked by these customers how fast a 911 GT3 with manual transmission would be on the Nordschleife”, Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Cars said. “We have now answered this question and – although we know that the variant with PDK is significantly faster – drove our lap time with a manual six-speed gearbox. Even without the automated, super-fast and precise gearshifts of the PDK and with a mechanical instead of electronically controlled limited-slip differential, the new 911 GT3 takes around 3.6 seconds off its predecessor with PDK.”

In sunny weather, at 54 degrees Fahrenheit ambient and 80 degrees asphalt temperature, Joerg Bergmeister set out on the 12.94 mile (20.832 kilometer) track in the late afternoon in the 502 hp 911 GT3 with optional Weissach Package. As with the official lap of the previous model, he drove using road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires in the dimensions 255/35 R 20 at the front and 315/30 R 21 at the rear.

The goal: fastest lap time of a production vehicle with manual transmission
“When we decided to set the official lap time of the new 911 GT3 with manual transmission, we naturally also looked at who was at the top of the leaderboard” Preuninger said. A competitor needed 7:01,300 minutes for the shorter 12.8 mile (20.6 kilometer) track layout. This corresponds to a time of around 7:05,800 minutes on the full 12.94 mile (20.832 kilometer) lap. Under supervision of an independent notary public, the lap time of the new 911 GT3 was validated at 6:56.294 minutes for the 12.94-mile (20.832-kilometer) lap. With that, Bergmeister improved the previous lap record by more than 9.5 seconds.

Better performance with the same engine power
“The new 911 GT3 inspires even more confidence at the limit than the previous model. I was faster in almost every corner,” Bergmeister said, describing the handling of the sports car. “We learned a lot from the 911 GT3 RS, especially with the chassis. The car is even more stable on bumps and over the curbs. And thanks to the eight percent shorter gear ratio, there is noticeably more power on the rear axle when accelerating with the same engine power. Even if it would have been a few seconds faster with the seven-speed PDK – with the six-speed manual gearbox I definitely had more to do on the fast lap and thus also a bit more fun.”

New update from Porsche Cars North America (PCNA)

Porsche reports record U.S. retail sales for first quarter 2025

Sports car maker breaks Q1 record set in 2023.
Atlanta. Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) today announced that first-quarter retail deliveries in the United States totaled 18,884 vehicles, up 40.6 percent from the first quarter of 2024 and up 8.1 percent, from the previous first-quarter record set in 2023. Demand is robust across most model lines and deliveries increased significantly after the supply-constrained first quarter of 2024.

"Despite the challenges facing the automotive industry today, Porsche is on solid footing in the United States," said Timo Resch, President and CEO of PCNA. "These record-breaking numbers would not be possible without the enthusiasm of our long-time customers and, of course, those new to the brand. We are grateful for the tremendous response to the new models and powertrains – many of which were introduced very recently. In addition, I am thankful for our teams in our Porsche Centers, in the field and at our headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia for their relentless commitment to supporting our customers.”

The Macan, a standout performer, led the quarter’s record performance with 7,486 SUVs sold. Notably, the Macan Electric accounted for 44.6 percent of Macan sales for the year to date.

Two-door sports cars also posted significant gains. The 911 achieved 2,086 retail sales, while deliveries of the 718 totaled 1,476 units in the first quarter.

Year-to-date, Cayenne sales totaled 5,331 and Panamera 1,486.

Thanks to the success of the Macan BEV, 23 percent of all Porsche vehicles sold in the first quarter were fully electric. Taycan sales totaled 1,019 this quarter, slightly down from the same period in 2024.

Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales in the U.S. totaled 11,587 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, up 11.7 percent from the same quarter in 2024.

Porsche AG records robust results in a challenging environment

Porsche AG ended the 2024 financial year with a robust result in a challenging environment. The sports car manufacturer marked record sales in four out of five regions of the world, as well as strong automotive net cashflow, which almost reached the record levels of 2023.

  • Robust 2024 financial year: Group sales revenue of 40.1 billion euros, Group Operating profit of 5.6 billion euros, Group operating return on sales of 14.1 per cent.
  • Strong net cashflow almost reaches record levels of 2023.
  • Proposed dividend amount the same as previous year.
  • Negative effects from market developments in China, the slower-than-expected ramp-up of e-mobility, and disruptions in the supplier network partially offset.
  • Historic sales records in four out of five world regions.
  • Corporate and product strategy further developed: comprehensive cost and recalibration program initiated, additional investments in combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and battery activities.
  • Porsche continues to focus on a mix of drivetrains with combustion-engined, hybrid and all-electric sports cars.
  • CEO Dr Oliver Blume: “We have renewed five out of six models and extensively refreshed our product portfolio. This has laid the foundation for our success in the coming years, with the clear goal of exciting our customers with our iconic sports cars.”
  • CFO Dr Jochen Breckner: “Porsche has proven in 2024 that we operate highly profitably even in challenging times. In the long term, we remain committed to our fundamental goal of a Group operating return on sales of more than 20 per cent. In the medium term, we are aiming for 15 to 17 per cent due to the persistently challenging environment. We are consciously setting out on a comprehensive recalibration and sustainably strengthening Porsche for the future.

Stuttgart. With the 911, Cayenne, Panamera, Taycan, and the electric Macan, Porsche renewed five out of its six model lines and successfully introduced them in the markets. At the same time, the company has resolutely adapted its product and corporate planning to the changed circumstances. The sports car manufacturer continues to rely on a mix of drivetrains. Its customers will still be able to choose between combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and all-electric drivetrains in every vehicle segment well into the 2030s.

“We have renewed five out of six model lines and extensively refreshed our product portfolio. This has laid the foundation for our success in the coming years, with the clear goal of exciting our customers with our iconic sports cars,” says CEO Dr Oliver Blume. “In view of the changed circumstances, we have adjusted our product strategy in all segments. And we further developed our proven and successful Porsche strategy over the course of last year to make the company even more flexible, robust and high-performing.”

911: a sports car icon with new top derivatives

Porsche will offer further highly emotive derivatives, especially of the 911. These include high-yield and exciting limited-edition models. The sports car icon will revive the style of the 1970s via a heritage limited-edition model from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur – the third of four collector's cars from the Heritage Design Strategy. In the medium term, the 911 family will also welcome an additional flagship model, which will raise the bar even further in the sports car segment.

In order to make the Macan better in every way, Porsche decided early on to fully electrify the model line. The all-electric Macan sets new standards in terms of performance, driving experience and design and has been very well received by customers. Once the combustion-engined models of the same name have been phased out, the Macan will be sold exclusively as an all-electric model, worldwide. At the same time, Porsche is continuously monitoring market development and customer demand. If necessary, the company looks ahead and adapts its product strategy. For example, the sports car manufacturer is currently evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid powertrains. It would have a new design and Porsche's characteristic profile, and would benefit from synergies. The model could be launched towards the end of the decade.

At Porsche, all three drive technologies symbolize emotion, performance and efficiency. An example of this is the Cayenne. In 2023, the current generation (a mix of combustion-engined and plug-in hybrid models) received one of the most extensive product upgrades in Porsche's history and it will be further developed in the future with considerable engineering effort. The sales of this model line were at an all-time high in 2024. At the same time, the fourth generation of the bestseller – a completely newly developed and designed electric model – is intended to significantly support the ramp-up of electric mobility at Porsche. The combustion-engined and electric models will be available in parallel well into the 2030s. Following on from the all-electric Cayenne, Porsche will introduce all-electric sports cars in the 718 segment.

The sports car manufacturer is also further expanding the possibilities for customization. There are already more than 1,000 Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur options available, while the Sonderwunsch program provides the scope for almost anything that a customer could wish for – from exclusive details through to factory one-offs. Over the past five years, the average revenue per vehicle with Exclusive Manufaktur options has doubled. To enable even more individual customer dreams to be fulfilled, Exclusive Manufaktur’s capacity is to be significantly expanded.

Reorganization and comprehensive program for recalibration

At the end of February, Porsche AG initiated a long-term change in its Executive Board. Dr Jochen Breckner took over responsibility for Finance and IT and Matthias Becker for Sales and Marketing. They succeeded Lutz Meschke and Detlev von Platen, who have left the company after more than a decade in their leadership posts. Porsche AG has launched a comprehensive program to rescale the company. By 2029, the number of jobs is to be reduced by around 1,900 positions. Porsche is leveraging demographic developments, natural turnover and a restrictive hiring policy to achieve this. In addition, socially acceptable measures are being implemented on a voluntary basis, including a special program for partial retirement and, in individual cases, termination agreements with severance payments. Furthermore, the company is reducing the workforce by another 2,000 jobs through the expiration of fixed-term employment contracts. In addition to these immediate measures, management and the Works Council are negotiating an additional structural package in the second half of the year. This will also make Porsche even more efficient in the medium and long term.

Porsche is also pushing ahead with its Road to 20 performance program. In 2024 this played a major role in partially offsetting the negative effects on results from a challenging environment. In the future, it will be the leading instrument on the way to achieving a fundamental long-term ambition of a Group operating return on sales of more than 20 per cent. “In 2025, we will once again intensify Road to 20 with a focus on the cost structure,” says Dr Breckner, Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT.

Robust 2024 financial year

Earnings in the 2024 financial year were mainly impacted by the challenging economic environment and the comprehensive renewal of the product portfolio. The tense market situation in China, the delayed global ramp-up of electromobility and disruptions in the supplier network had an impact on earnings and return on sales. Porsche management has partially mitigated the effects of these thanks to a number of countermeasures.

Group sales revenue was 40.1 billion euros, a single percentage point below the previous year's figure (40.5 billion euros). Porsche thereby almost entirely compensated for the decline in sales figures. This was achieved by a higher proportion of customizations and improved price positioning of the newly launched products. Group operating profit decreased to 5.6 billion euros (previous year: 7.3 billion euros). The group operating return on sales amounted to 14.1 per cent (previous year: 18.0 per cent). In 2024, Porsche has proven that we are highly profitable even in challenging times and that we are financially robust,” says Dr Breckner. Automotive net cashflow amounted to 3.7 billion euros, almost on a par with 2023’s record year (4.0 billion euros). This figure includes cash outflows of 250 million euros in connection with pension plans. The automotive net cashflow margin was 10.2 per cent (previous year: 10.6 per cent), which was above the forecasts.

Porsche was also robust in terms of deliveries in the 2024 financial year, with 310,718 cars going out to customers. In a challenging environment, Porsche recorded sales records in four out of five regions of the world – in Europe, Germany, North America and the Overseas and Emerging markets. Nevertheless, the total number decreased slightly compared to the previous year (320,221 vehicles). This was mainly due to the continuing market challenges in China. The bestseller was the Cayenne with 102,889 examples being delivered, ahead of the Macan (82,795) and the 911 (50,941). In the 2024 financial year, 27 per cent of the new vehicles delivered were electrified – i.e. fully electric or plug-in hybrid. This share is predicted to significantly increase over the next few years as a result of the Porsche product portfolio. The expectation for 2025 is in a range between 33 and 35 per cent electrified vehicles, including 20 to 22 per cent fully electric.

In motorsport, Porsche has seldom seen more success than it did in 2024, when it won the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) driver’s title and all classes in the American IMSA racing series. In Formula E, works driver Pascal Wehrlein became the drivers' world champion.

Dividend remains at previous year's level

In the 2024 financial year, earnings per ordinary share amounted to 3.94 euros and earnings per preferred share to 3.95 euros. The Executive Board and Supervisory Board will propose to the Annual General Meeting of Porsche AG a dividend payment of 2.1 billion euros. As in the previous year, this corresponds to 2.30 euros per ordinary share and 2.31 euros per preference share.

2025: start of comprehensive recalibration

In 2025, in total, Porsche will invest an additional 800 million euros in rescaling and in its product portfolio and software and battery activities. In doing so, the company intends to increase its profitability and resilience in the short and medium term. “The extensive rescaling of the company as well as the investments we will be making will have a negative impact on the result for the 2025 financial year,” says Dr Breckner. “We are consciously setting out on a comprehensive recalibration and sustainably strengthening Porsche for the future." In its forecast for 2025, Porsche is expecting market conditions to remain very challenging and for competition in China to intensify. Geopolitical uncertainties are also expected. The current forecast for 2025 takes into account the current framework conditions. Further potential import restrictions and tariffs have not been factored in.

For the 2025 financial year, Porsche AG expects a Group operating return on sales in a range of 10 to 12 per cent based on the aforementioned assumptions. This is below the figure for the 2024 financial year. Besides the additional investments that are planned, the main reasons for this include reduced vehicle sales and an unchanged high cost level in the value chain. In addition, very high depreciation will remain due to the extensive investments of recent years. This forecast includes assumed sales revenues in the region of around 39 to 40 billion euros. Dr Jochen Breckner: “In the long term, we remain committed to our fundamental ambition of a Group operating return on sales of more than 20 per cent. In the medium term, we are aiming for 15 to 17 per cent due to the persistently challenging environment.”
